Stage 4 - 5: Science in Action

Observation drives scientific investigation. Central to scientific inquiry is the idea that we need evidence to be able to develop solid conclusions. In this workshop students work as scientists exploring the Key Inquiry Question- How does observation instigate scientific investigation?

Stage 4: Classification of Living Things
Stage 4: Classification of Living Things

The living world is all around us, and what better way to explore it than at Taronga Zoo! Step into the habitat classrooms where your students will be able to get up close and learn from one of Taronga’s Education Officers about the similarities and differences of the structural features of animals and how these adaptations help them survive in their localised environments.

Stage 4: Living Systems
Stage 4: Living Systems

Step inside Taronga’s Habitat Classrooms and explore the living world through close encounters with incredible animals. In this interactive lesson, students investigate the key components of an ecosystem, from the non-living factors that shape habitats to the plants, animals, and decomposers that interact within them. Students will have the opportunity to observe and interact with a range of species, learning how a successfully functioning ecosystem requires all components to be balanced. Students will also investigate real-world examples of ecosystem disturbances in Australia and their impacts on native species.

Stage 5: Environmental Change and Management

Taronga's local and international conservation projects provide the perfect resource for your Environmental Change and Management investigative study. In this workshop students will develop an understanding of the causes and consequences of human-induced environmental change in Australia and Sumatra that is challenging sustainability.

Stage 6: Biological Diversity
Stage 6: Biological Diversity

Biodiversity is important to balance the Earth’s ecosystems. Students will learn about the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, evidence for evolution and the effect of various selective pressures, focusing on species observed by Charles Darwin.  In this workshop, students investigate different types of adaptations and the relationships between organisms in terms of specialisation, using a range of interesting Australian and exotic species as examples.

Stage 6: Heredity and Genetic ChangeStage 6: Heredity and Genetic Change
Stage 6: Heredity and Genetic Change
Stage 6: Heredity and Genetic Change

How does reproduction ensure the continuity of a species? Does artificial manipulation of DNA have the potential to change populations forever? In this workshop, students will explore how biodiversity is achieved through reproduction and heredity. Using a range of Australian animals as case studies, students will investigate a variety of reproductive technologies that Taronga Zoo utilizes to ensure successful breeding and inheritance patterns.
